Keep the Communication Going
We all have family who we don’t communicate well with. The popular, “Well, it’s supposed to be sunny next week” has been said by myself before and it’s just awkward. It’s hard to maintain a conversation or a relationship with someone who just doesn’t have any common interests, other than the weather.
We know we need to pick up the phone and call to say hi, but we just don’t know what to say. And we postpone it, time after time. More time has gone by, and then there might not be a chance to say hi.
Someone reached out to me and said the ‘60 days of human interaction’ jokes were great for herself and her elderly father, who have had a stressed relationship, but she continues to call him weekly. This has made me think, why don’t we share this story?
Each joke has made a world a difference for them, a common ground. They have been able to laugh together and share something to converse about that is positive and light-hearted. This might be your avenue to keep communication going other than the weather topic.
A single joke may even bring out fun unknown stories, like how your aunt went on a Mediterranean cruise in her 20s! I learned during these 60 days that a long time friend doesn’t like chocolate?!? You never know, you might find out something you didn’t know about that person until you chat a little bit.
Some of you may have close relationships with your family members (parents, grandparents, cousins, etc.) just with different circumstances. Maybe they live far away in other states and/or cities, are away studying at universities, or just busy with life. Sharing a joke or a “would you rather” is a great way to stay connected. Have the kids call the grandparents and share a joke!
Sometimes it’s awkward with family. You don’t have a lot in common with them to start, let alone have a conversation. But I cannot stress enough that someday you may want to pick up the phone and they are not there to call. Don’t miss the chance as each day is a gift of life.
Start with a joke, a “would you rather”, or ask them a question and see where the conversation goes. You may surprise yourself with a small, yet great conversation starter.
